Meet Khaled Hassan

In 2013, Khaled made the move from Egypt to Tauranga, New Zealand to explore new opportunities for his family. Find out why Khaled chose Beca as an employee and the exciting range of local and International opportunities he’s been exposed to since he joined the team.

1. What attracted you to Beca? 

Cultural diversity. When I moved to New Zealand at the end of 2013 and I still remember this quote from Beca advertisement, “Beca prides itself on supporting a diverse and inclusive culture – open to inputs from creative people of all genders, ethnicity, identity, thought and experiences”, after working five years for Beca, I can say it is proven to be true.

2. On your first day at Beca, what stood out to you? 

There is a great bond between the Beca team and new people joining. Everybody is learning from one another. There seems to be a great acceptance of people coming in. It was not an easy move from the middle east to New Zealand but since day one, I have found lots of support from the Tauranga office. This has helped us to settle quite quickly.

3. What sort of projects have you been involved in? 

I am lucky to be involved in a huge range of exciting projects for the industrial business line. I have done several electrical and control upgrading projects for Oji Fibre solution across Kinleith and Tasman Mills. Also, replacing the main 11kV switchgear for Fonterra Reporoa. Internationally, I led the E&IC package for the dry stacking Study for Vale in New Caledonia and a couple of cathodic protection projects for TOTAL in Fiji.

4. What has been your favourite accomplishment at Beca? 

In the last two years, I have been the client relationship manager for Oji Fibre solution Kinleith, which is the biggest client for our forestry segment. Early 2019, we won the engineering services agreement for the Kinleith Mill for the next five years. It is a great opportunity to work in a sustainable industry and with a great client team to help them deliver important projects.

5. What gets you out of bed every morning? 

My kids are the biggest motivators in my life. They’re the main reason why we decided to move to New Zealand and start another chapter of our life. I get up every morning to keep growing in my technical field, so that one day I can take on a management role and provide my family with the absolute best life possible.

6. How does the work you do ‘make everyday better’ for our clients and communities? 

The most important thing we’re looking for is a great cultural fit. The industrial team is a bunch of creative individuals who love what they do and have fun while doing it. We always work as a team to develop new ideas and share technical innovation. Our main goal is to achieve outstanding results for our clients.

7. What does the next 12 months hold for you? 

On the work front, I’m looking forward to continuing work with a team at Kinleith Mill. My main focus is to understand our client needs, set work priorities, and provide smart solutions for the major challenges they face. As a family, we are planning to spend the next kid's school holiday in Egypt with our big family and old friends. It is an excellent opportunity to keep the kids connected with our home country.
