Designed to meet operational air transport requirements for aircraft movements, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF)’s new Ohakea Air Movements Terminal delivers this – and more.

The Terminal also needed to enhance RNZAF’s ability to respond in an emergency or disaster. The new 5,800m2 terminal uses a swing-gate layout. The flexibility of this layout means it can accommodate simultaneous international and domestic military flights.

It includes arrival and departure lounges, a passenger processing area, baggage handling areas, international transfer and customs capability (with areas for all border control functions), as well as a purpose-built freight handling facility.

Our architectural design services are reflected in the architectural statement that the terminal makes. It’s sympathetic to the adjacent 1940s hangars while also presenting a clean, modern face to RNZAF air transport operations.

The Air Movements Terminal was the final piece in Project TAKITINI – the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF)’s essential infrastructure programme, and one of the most successful infrastructure programmes the NZDF has undertaken in recent times.
