Find the right career opportunity for you
SearchFazia is a fun-loving, knowledge-seeking mechanical engineer in the Buildings team. She values her team and the connections she makes everyday. What attracted you to Beca?
Honestly, it was the company culture. I had a friend who worked in Beca’s Tauranga office (she still works for Beca) and she would say great things about the company culture and how much she liked working with the team. Not many companies have 'Enjoyment' as one of their values and that really stood out to me.
On your first day at Beca, what stood out to you?
I would say I have had two ‘first’ days at Beca - one in my previous role in the Melbourne office as Business Administrator, and the second in my current role as Mechanical Engineer in the Sydney office. Both times I felt very welcome. What really stood out to me was the social cohesion.
What sort of projects have you been involved in?
I’m a mechanical engineer and primarily design heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) for commercial buildings. I’ve been involved in many projects, including labs, shopping centres, offices, hospitals and rail stations.
What has been your favourite accomplishment at Beca?
My favourite accomplishment would definitely be landing my first engineering role. I graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in 2013 and took some time off before I got into the industry. Beca gave me the opportunity to gain exposure in the industry where I provided engineering help with projects on a casual basis during my (official) admin role. This led to the graduate engineering role I’m in now.
What gets you out of bed every morning?
I have a very supportive team lead who is a great mentor to me. I look forward to learning new things every day and giving my work 100%. It makes a huge difference when you have a team who enjoy what they do and try making everyday better for each other.
How does the work you do ‘make everyday better’ for our clients and communities?
I am pretty sure no one wants to live in buildings without heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, or any other buildings services for that matter. The designs we create are essential to sustaining and growing communities.
What advice would you give to graduates or developing professionals?
Looking for jobs can be a challenging process so try grabbing opportunities no matter how unconventional. For example, accepting the role as an admin paved the way to the job I wanted. And don’t hesitate to ask questions – Beca has numerous people with great knowledge and experience who will not hesitate to give or help you find answers.
What does the next 12 months hold for you?
I will have finished the two year Beca Graduate Development Programme which will most definitely mean more personal and professional growth for me. I’m hoping to continue to learn more from a variety of exciting and versatile projects.
The Sydney Buildings team go for coffee together every morning; that on its own starts your day out on a great note, and helps to build a great team culture.
