Beca awards inaugural Beca Red Cross Scholarship

On Tuesday 27 November, a celebratory morning tea was held in the Beca Wellington office to award Eyob Jambo Teshome from Ethiopia the first Beca Red Cross Scholarship.

The Beca Red Cross Scholarship was set up to support a former refugee looking to undertake tertiary studies in a technology or engineering-related field. Beca contributes $1,000 to contribute towards tuition fees and materials, a laptop, as well as a Beca mentor and future work experience in our team.

Eyob and his sister were reunited with their monther after arriving in New Zealand from Ethiopia in January earlier this year. He is set to study a Bachelor of Architecture, majoring in Building Science, at Victoria University of Wellington in 2019.

In Ethiopia, Eyob was required by the government to study a degree in water resource and irrigation engineering because of a skills shortage. However, Eyob’s real passion lies in architecture and buildings with an interest in building energy usage. His goal is to make buildings more sustainable and find ways to make smaller, more efficient houses to reduce the pressure on the housing crisis.

Eyob is grateful to have the support of Beca behind him. He says, “it is a good opening to my future study – not just because of the money and material I will receive. It means a lot when you realise you have a company like Beca supporting you. Thank you.”

Michael Kerr, Beca’s Regional Manager for the Central Region is delighted to partner with the New Zealand Red Cross to support former refugees looking to embark on tertiary studies in New Zealand. Michael said, “We are glad to partner with the New Zealand Red Cross to support Eyob with his degree and his future as a Building Scientist. Our goal is to continue to promote STEM subjects and encourage a wide range of people to consider these career options to ensure future diversity in our industry.”
